Tet Celebrations: AES Vietnam Supports Disadvantaged Communities in Quang Ninh and Binh Thuan Province
“The Plant is super clean. The garden is super green. And the people are super … teen. We are grateful that the company organized this summer camp for us. We have learnt more about electricity and been able to create some simple electric items by ourselves.”
That was the comment by the students from Mong Duong ward after participating in a 5-day, from 1 to 5 July 2019, summer camp organized by AES Vietnam at a local secondary school. This was a part of Future Energy Scholarship Program where the company involved the scholarship winners, being electric students from Quang Ninh province, into its social activities. It was also a good opportunity for them to make contribution to their homeland.
“At first, we doubted that it would work. But later, when we felt the cool air blown out from the “air conditioner”, it was really exciting. It was very “cool” to know how an aircon basically operates”, said a boy cheerfully when telling about his experience to apply the knowledge he has learned to practice producing a mini air conditioner.
Eager to operate a self-created mini air conditioner for the first time
This summer camp, in coordination with the Center for Education Development (CED) – an experienced Vietnamese non-profit organization on training and education and Mong Duong Secondary School, was designed with many interesting activities focusing on STEM topics like electricity and electric safety; creating electric toys; implementing funny physical and chemical experiments; clouds observation and weather forecast; raw water filtering, etc. These activities were guided by the university students who divided the children into small groups and leaded them through all the sessions of the event.

Mong Duong is the biggest ward of Cam Pha city with population of more than 16,000 residing in remote and hilly areas. People mainly live on farming and livestock. During 3-month summer holidays, the children often stay at home to help their parents with farming or housework. Not many summer clubs or activities are organized to help develop their skills or practice their knowledge.
“Besides scientific activities, big brothers and sisters also trained us with soft skills like presentation, time management and future planning. These are very helpful to us to discover ourselves and shape the way to our future. I wish I will become an electrical engineer like those uncles working in the Plant that we met. And some of my friends wish the same”, said Vu Minh Quan, Grade 7 of Mong Duong Secondary School.

With the targets to encourage the local children, who are often very shy and lack interactive skill in teamwork, to feel more confident to share their opinions and hobbies as well as inspire them with knowledge relating to STEM subjects, this program received strong supports and acknowledgement from the Company’s leadership and local authorities.

“I have spent these days with 50 pupils in Mong Duong for the summer camp. Go further than summer activities for the children, I felt it really comfortable, strong people connecting, much fun and a lot of smiles. This was so helpful for both us and the children. I appreciated the supports by the Company, CED and all the students and hope that we will have more summer camps like this in the next years”, shared by Ms. Ngo Thi Thu Ha, Vice Principal of Mong Duong Secondary School on the last day of the event.
