AES Mong Duong Highlights Safety Commitment at Safety Day 2024
Keeping its people and contractors safe after each working day has always been the ultimate goal of all safety activities at AES Vietnam. For the last six years, the company has been successful in maintaining world-class safety standards and this outstanding effort was again recognized with the 6th RoSPA Gold Medal in 2020.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards are one of the most prestigious and recognized awards in the world, with almost 2,000 entries every year and a reach of over 7 million employees. Announced recently, the 6th RoSPA Gold Medal in 2020 acknowledged the health and safety performance of AES Vietnam during the period from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019.
With nearly 300 employees working on site every day at the Mong Duong II Thermal power plant, maintaining the highest health and safety standards for six consecutive years is not a simple task. In 2019, out of a total of about 2 million manhours at the plant, 34,519 hours were spent on safety training, covering over 30 topics. The training activities contributed significantly to the formation of the company’s strong safety culture.
“Our challenge is that people have different levels of safety education and awareness, especially those from our contractors who often work at height or with heavy machinery. Through frequent training activities and practice of safety behaviors, we brought the safety awareness of our contractors to a higher level. Similar to AES’ people, our contractors now take all safety concerns seriously. No safety issue was ignored – even the smallest one,” said Sajjad Rana, EHS Manager.
Besides training, practical safety measures are one of the key factors contributing to AES Vietnam’s safety achievements. The year 2019 recorded an increase in the number of safety walks and observations by 17.3% and 5.2% respectively compared with 2018. The good news is that the contractors contributed actively to this increase. AES’ safety culture has had a strong influence on the awareness and practice of local contractors. The “your safety is my safety” working attitude can be seen everywhere at the power plant.
Speaking about the award, Kevin Pierce, Plant Manager, said, “It is not only about the award itself but about our team’s continuous efforts and determination. We have been working with the utmost concentration against every risk. The task also requires strong coordination of all teams and high levels of awareness from each individual. Therefore, this is a well-deserved achievement that I will always be proud of.”
