On 27 March 2019, Mr. David Stone, Managing Director of AES Mong Duong Power Company Ltd., joined the Executive Board Meeting of VBCSD in Hanoi. The meeting waschaired by Dr. Vu Tien Loc, Chairman of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCT) cum Chairman of VBCSD with the participationsof executive members of VBCSD, who are leading companies in sustainable development in Vietnam includingHeineken, Bao Viet, AES Mong Duong, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Delloite, Coca-Cola, Suntory-PepsiCo and other members.
It was acknowledged by all the members that VBCSD’s implementation of 4 core activities including communication, training, research and international cooperation gained great achivevments during 2018 with nearly 30 workshops and training courses organized attracting over 2,700 participations; many news, articles, ,materials speciallized in sustainable development published on its website and top public media channels effectively demonstrated VBCSD’s activities and help to increase 11 official members uptomostly 300 members in 2018.
Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI100) continued to be signature program to rank Vietnam’s top 100 sustainable enterprises in 2019. This year, VBCSD considersincluding “use of child labors” as one of the assessment criteria. There was also opinion that “gender equality at work” should also be considered as a standard of CSI100.
Relating to dissemination of circular economy initiatives, some pilot projects have been implemented through out the year including “Zero waste to nature” co-organized by Coca-Cola, Unilever and Dow to help reduce and recycle plastic waste; and establishment of secondary materials market in Vietnam by VBCSD in coordination with United States Business Council for Sustainable Development (USBSD) and Pathway 21.
Adding to the circular economy discussion, Mr. David Stone said “AES Mong Duong is doing its best effort in transferring power plant’s by-products of fly ash, bottom ash and gypsum to eligible agencies for treatment and reuse as construction materials. This is strongly encouraged by Vietnamese government and it is doing very good process to facilitate cement and power plants on that. Moreover, with an average electricity demand increases by 10% each year until 2030, AES Mong Duong is also actively joining in strong intensive renewable energy market of Vietnam through its on-going development of 80MW Binh Thuan Solar Project.”
In the afternoon session at the Government Office with Vice Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, he congratulated VBCSD on its success in 2018. On the other hand, Vice Prime Minister Dam expressed expectation that the corporate sustainability index will be simplified so that all the companies including the SMEs can adopt and help to widely spread out sustainable development spirit in the business community. He also emphasized the importance of the circular economy initiatives which helped to solve the problem of plastic waste and nylon bags. “VBCSD should propose to the Government the preferential policies to support businesses involved in waste recycle or sponsor programs that call on people to classify garbage. The pilot projects or initiatives should be shared to each member of VBCSD in order to multiply widely in the business community and later, call on the participation of whole society” Mr. Dam said.
