President AES Vietnam Olivier Marquette joined and delivered a speech at the forum with the theme “30 Years of Vietnam–U.S. Relations: Advancing Balanced and Sustainable Trade”, organized by Tien Phong Newspaper. The forum was held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States, which brought together senior government officials, business leaders, and international stakeholders to exchange views on emerging opportunities and challenges, while proposing solutions to promote balanced and sustainable bilateral trade.
Mr. Olivier Marquette underscored AES’s continued commitment to fostering strong international partnerships and contributing to Vietnam’s economic development. He stated: “AES is currently one of the largest U.S investors in Vietnam. We have successfully developed and operated the Mong Duong 2 Thermal Power Plant project with a total investment of over 2 billion USD. We are now continuing to develop LNG-to-power projects in Vietnam.”
He also emphasized the potential contribution of LNG power projects in helping to balance the trade relationship between the United States and Vietnam. “Based on current conditions of the LNG market, our project Son My 2 power plant alone will use about $600 million worth of LNG per year, for 20 years the project according to the Power Purchase Agreement. Once the full capacity of LNG to power projects under PDP8 will be
built by 2030, such projects are expected to use collectively about $6 billion of LNG per year. This provides a very significant opportunity to reduce Vietnam trade deficit with the U.S., should such projects use LNG coming from the U.S.”
The forum also served as a platform to reaffirm the shared vision of both nations in advancing economic ties, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusive development.
