On August 18, 2020, a delegation from Vietnam’s National Assembly, led by Member of the Central Executive Committee of Vietnam Communist Party and Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Mr. Phung Quoc Hien, visited and had a working session at AES Vietnam’s Mong Duong 2 BOT Coal-fired Power Plant. The delegation was joined by officials from Quang Ninh People’s Committee and other departments in Quang Ninh Province.
During the visit, the plant’s operation team conducted a tour around the plant for the representatives and highlighted that as the first BOT power plant in the country and beginning operation in 2015, Mong Duong 2 plant is now one of the most technologically-advanced coal-fired power plants in Vietnam. With an investment of US$2.1 billion, and two units totaling 1,242 MW, the plant represents approximately 2.3% of the country’s installed capacity.
“We are proud to run the Mong Duong 2 Power Plant. In the last five years, it has played a key role in ensuring energy security in Vietnam and providing electricity which helps fuel local economic and social development. Our electricity generation for the first half of 2020 has reached over 4.9 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), exceeding the target of 4.7 billion kWh set by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) for the period by five percent.” said Stan Riner, Operations Manager at Mong Duong 2 Power Plant.
During discussions, the delegation was interested to hear about the safe and reliable operations at the plant, and the production of by-products such as fly ash, bottom ash and gypsum. The delegation appreciated the team’s efforts in finding ways to increase the sale of these by-products to producers in the cement and construction industry. Technical experts from the plant also offered practical applications of those by-products in the US and Korea, such as unburnt bricks produced from the ash, and highlighted the importance of linking thermal power plants with cement plants or other companies which have demand for these materials.
At the end of the meeting, the operation team also affirmed to the delegation that the plant has been implementing strict preventive measures and putting in place major efforts to ensure the health of its employees and the continuity of electricity production, contributing to the overall stability of the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
