Hanoi, 8 December, 2020. AES Mong Duong, a subsidiary of AES Vietnam, today announced the AES Future Energy Scholarship program for the new academic year in 2020-2021. The program is implemented in cooperation with the Center for Education Development (CED) to support talented students at three universities, including Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Electric Power University (EPU) and Vietnam National University – University of Science (VNU-HUS).
The AES Future Energy Scholarship is one of the company’s initiatives to invest in educating and training a high-tech workforce for Quang Ninh Province in particular and Vietnam’s energy sector in general. This year, scholarships worth a total of more than VND600 million will be awarded to 20 students from the three universities. Each student selected will not only receive US$600 in financial support but also benefit from soft skills training, career information exchanges, volunteer activities and site visits to Mong Duong 2 BOT Power Plant, which is operated by AES Mong Duong in Quang Ninh Province.
This is the fourth year the AES Future Energy Scholarship has been implemented, receiving high appreciation from the universities, professors and students.
On this occasion, with the aim to form deeper and broader partnerships, the company, CED and the three aforementioned universities have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on the implementation of the AES Future Energy Scholarship program. The MoUs will be implemented over three years from 2020 to 2023, aiming to support talented students in energy-related fields who are facing financial difficulties at these universities. Students who are to receive the scholarships will be selected by a team including AES and CED representatives in coordination with the universities.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. David Stone, President of AES in Vietnam, CEO of AES Mong Duong, said: “In the last 15 years of operating in Vietnam, AES has been providing safe, reliable and sustainable energy which helps fuel the country’s growth and development. We are focused on talent development and investing in people and education is a top priority in our corporate social responsibility activities. This year, I am happy to see the scholarship program has reached new heights with 3-year MoUs between AES, CED and the three major universities which have been providing high-quality personnel for the energy sector. Through this cooperation, I hope the scholarship and training package will help students achieve their educational goals and become valuable members of the future workforce.”
Mr. Pham Viet Phuong, Vice Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering and coordinator of the scholarship programs from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, said: “We are delighted and appreciate the support from AES to students specialized in the fields of electricity and energy. The scholarships will encourage students to work harder at school and give them the chance to improve their soft skills which are vital for personal development and their careers in the future.”
The AES Future Energy Scholarship is part of AES Mong Duong’s CSR program which has been carried out since 2012. A total of 130 CSR initiatives, valued at more than VND12 billion, have been implemented, focusing on four main pillars – Health, Education, Livelihoods and Infrastructure – and have made a long-lasting impact in improving the lives of more than 200,000 people in local communities in Vietnam.
