A project by a team from AES Mong Duong has won second place at the 2022 US and Eurasia APEX, in the Operation Category, and will now go on to compete in the global event.
Led by Pham Van Cham, Control Board Operator, AES Mong Duong, the team designed the project ‘Reducing Mill Swapping Cost of 6-Mill Operation’, which aims to improve the plant’s heat rate by operating six mills versus five. Through this method, the company is estimated to save about US$3 million per year with no investment cost. In addition, the plant would see enhanced reliability, reduced forced outages, and a lower environmental impact due to fewer restarts.
Specifically, Mong Duong 2 has two 560 MW units and six mills for each unit. Since the commissioning phase, the site operated with a five mill in service (MIS) configuration at full load. However, there was an opportunity to shift to a six MIS configuration because this would significantly reduce heat rate and increase reliability.
Overall, the project contributes to the stability of the national power grid and allows for more flexibility in grid capacity. Furthermore, the project can be replicated in plants with a similar design to Mong Duong 2.
Pham Van Cham, spoke about the meaning of the award, “By winning second place in the regional round, my team felt very excited because our efforts have been acknowledged, and we are more confident in affirming that Mong Duong 2 always strives towards the core goal of the corporation – operating the plant safely and efficiently, constantly improving and creating, and together building a stronger team. This is part of our value ‘All together’, and through our work, we aim for the highest safety standards.”
AES Performance Excellence (APEX) is one of the most important tools used across AES markets that encourages AES people to submit ideas to further improve the performance, reliability and safety of our sites.
Projects compete in multiple rounds, starting locally, then moving to Strategic Business Unit (SBU) competitions, and lastly culminating in the global competition.
“At AES, we strive to work together to achieve the highest standards. A great example of our highest standards is the APEX program. Through APEX projects, diverse teams collaborate and make a difference by improving safety, attaining financial savings, achieving process efficiencies and more,” said Pham Van Cham.
On March 23, AES held the 2022 US and Eurasia APEX in the Replication category. The teams presented twelve projects to a judging panel, who carefully reviewed and selected the best projects. The five winners have been announced to represent the US and Eurasia at the Global APEX Competition.
The competitions are an exciting way for project teams to share their ideas and hard work with others and gain well-deserved recognition for the improvements they have achieved in plant operations, safety and cost-efficiency.
