On 16 and 28 April, the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper, and a delegation from the US Embassy in Vietnam visited the representative offices of AES Vietnam in Hanoi and Binh Thuan. The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Olivier Marquette, President of AES Vietnam and AES Vietnam leadership team.
The visits included discussions on the progress of the Son My 2 CCGT power plant project and the transaction of Mong Duong 2 BOT power plant. Mr. Olivier Marquette stated, ” We were honored to host US Ambassador Marc Knapper and his team at our offices at AES Vietnam, to discuss progress on the development of our Son My 2 and Son My LNG Terminal projects. Son My 2 project alone once operational has the potential to import US LNG worth $600m per year during 20 years. We are committed to advancing the Son My 2 and Mong Duong 2 projects, which are crucial for the energy infrastructure in Vietnam.”
Both parties emphasized the importance of sustainable development and the role of innovative energy solutions in driving economic growth. Mr. Olivier Marquette highlighted the company’s long-term commitment to Vietnam and its goal of contributing to the country’s energy security. “We are proud to be a part of Vietnam’s energy landscape and are dedicated to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions,” he said.
In Vietnam, AES Vietnam plays an important role as a key supplier of baseload power. Through its subsidiary, AES successfully developed and arranged financing for the 1,242 MW Mong Duong 2 BOT thermal power plant with a total investment of approximately USD 2.1 billion. In 2019, AES Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop the 2.2 GW Son My 2 combined cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) power plant project in Binh Thuan province. Through the project, AES Vietnam would support Vietnam in its transition to eliminate coal dependency and bridge green transformation of the energy sector. It would also help improve the security of supply by providing firm capacity as more renewables come online. The two projects Son My LNG Terminal and Son My 2 CCGT represent a total investment in Vietnam in excess of USD 3 billion. The construction of these projects would generate more than 4,500 jobs, enhance the local economy and improve the livelihoods of the local community. Together, the Son My LNG Terminal and Son My 2 CCGT are expected to play a major role in shaping Vietnam’s energy future by diversifying the energy mix with imported LNG and meeting the country’s increasing demand for sustainable and affordable electricity.
The visits concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to advancing energy projects that benefit both Vietnam and the United States.
